We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Congratulations Duncan LeBlanc!

‘Special Olympics Ontario’ and specifically the community of Greater Durham is proud to announce the most recent honour bestowed on long-time volunteer Duncan LeBlanc.  Duncan was nominated for a Governor General award by a ‘Toronto District School Board’ colleague, and received a Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on March 9th in London, Ontario.

Duncan is the principal of Maplewood High School in Scarborough. Maplewood is home to 200 students with complex special needs. Duncan was recognized for his special relationship with each of them in January 2016, when he was named one of Canada’s outstanding principals by ‘The Learning Partnership’ (a charity dedicated to advancing public education in the country).

In addition to coaching several high school sports teams since 1982, Duncan has been volunteering with ‘Special Olympics Ontario’ for the past decade.  He is the reason that there is a speed skating program in Greater Durham.  Duncan was a speed skating coach for the ‘Special Olympics Ontario’ team that attended the 2012 National Winter Games, and doubled his volunteer load as the head coach for the 2016 National Winter Games.  He exhibited great leadership, as he provided the athletes with generic training and dietary plans leading up to the games.

Between 2005 and 2015, Duncan served as a representative for ‘Autism Ontario’ with the ‘Special Education Advisory Committee’ (SEAC).  He assisted in developing a partnership between the ‘Toronto District School Board’, the ‘Ontario Speed Skating Association’ and ‘Special Olympics Ontario’.

Duncan is well deserving of this recognition, and continues to inspire everyone that he has contact with in his professional and volunteer life!
