GDSO Changes

posted Dec 11, 2017, 9:55 AM by Communications Greater Durham

Announcing a new GDSO Community Coordinator and Special Olympics Ontario ‘GTA District Developer’

After five years as our Special Olympics Ontario – Greater Durham ‘Community Coordinator’ and Council Chair, Janice Dewland is “passing the torch” to a new volunteer.

We thank Janice for the hundreds of hours that she has given in this role (over and above her hours as the head of the GDSO Oshawa Softball and Basketball programs).

We are very fortunate that a well qualified volunteer has come forward to lead our community.  Sue Simeson has retired as a ‘Durham District School Board’ elementary school principal, and as a new Special Olympics Ontario volunteer is looking forward to getting to know the administrative and operational workings of our community.

Also, as some of you are aware … one of our Special Olympics Ontario ‘GTA District Developer’ staff members  has changed jobs at S.O.O.  We thank Karla Williams for her help with our community, and wish her all the best in her new role as ‘Program Developer: Health and Leadership’. Our other staff ‘GTA District Developer’ Michael Chung has advised that his new partner is Javed Thadani. Javed is not new to Special Olympics (as he has worked under the S.O.O ‘Partners in Play Program’ with Garry MacLean and School Championships with Kirsten Bobbie).   In addition, Javed has been a S.O.O. coach and currently helps to run a partner S.O.O. basketball program.

Our community welcomes Sue and Javed!
