Greetings ‘Greater Durham’ athletes, volunteers, parents/caregivers and supporters,

As most of you know, the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) is a community based event that sees the "Flame of Hope" carried across Ontario by members of Law Enforcement agencies.  The objective is to raise funds for and awareness about the Special Olympics movement.

Here in Durham Region, members of the Durham Regional Police, Ontario Provincial Police and R.C.M.P. have conducted Torch Runs and events since the program started in Ontario in 1987.

-       DRPS shuttles will be available throughout the Run to transport athletes and Special Olympics volunteers back to their starting point.  Although there will be available shuttles to take the athletes BACK to their starting point, we can’t be responsible for taking each athlete home.  It is important that each group of athletes have a volunteer with them during their time at the event.

-       The DRPS will not allow personal vehicles to be included in the Torch Run convoy as a safety precaution for the athletes and runners.  As in past years there will be a bus following the runners, and the athletes can hop and off.  We will have a Special Olympics volunteer on the bus throughout the day to assist with this.

The Durham Regional Police Torch Run organizers have extended an invitation to all members of our Special Olympics community to come out and attend on their Torch Run dates.

*** Please forward this information to your Special O. contacts.

If you are attending, please try to wear a Special Olympics top.

Thanks to our D.R.P. members for doing the extra work to continue this proud and important tradition!
